Safety Tips For Pedestrians and Bicyclists [South Florida Edition 2021]

1. Crosswalks are important and should be used whenever available. Make sure the oncoming car intends to stop. As Florida tries to become pedestrian-friendly, many crosswalks are new and drivers are not yet used to stopping for pedestrians using a crosswalk. Many drivers are still routinely going through crosswalks while pedestrians are attempting to cross simply because the crosswalk wasn’t there six months ago.
2. Focus on your safety and not on your smartphone or headphones when walking in areas of heavy traffic. Pay attention only to the cars around you and staying out of their way.
3. Use the sidewalk. If there’s no sidewalk, walk facing traffic, as far away from oncoming cars as possible.
4. Assume drivers are distracted. Prior to crossing a crosswalk, try to make eye contact with the driver before crossing.
5. Keep in mind that construction seems to be continuous in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. A building that was in place one month is completely gone the next time you drive by. This adds to distractions for both pedestrians and drivers.
6. Always, always, look both ways before crossing.
7. Never, never, assume that a driver turning in the right lane has seen you. Make eye contact with the driver before crossing in front of the car or wait until they turn.
8. Remember that the sun in the Sunshine State can be blinding at times, making you more difficult to be seen. This is especially true at sunset.
9. More accidents occur at night when visibility is reduced: use extra caution after dusk.
