Surprisingly, maybe not.
As of late April 2019, 50 of the 250 nursing homes in Palm Beach County, ranging from Boca Raton through Stuart, didn’t have generators. It’s no better in Broward County: nursing homes in cities from Hallandale to Deerfield Beach lacked generators or were otherwise not prepared.[2] Statewide, of the state’s 685 licensed nursing homes, 438 obtained extensions on the state mandate to install backup generators. [3] Assisted Living Facilities are likewise struggling: 38% of Florida’s beds in assisted living facilities have requested additional time to comply with the rule[4], set into place after the tragic heat-related nursing home deaths in the wake of the 2017 Hurricane Irma. The rule requires the generators to be equipped with 96 hours of fuel: just four days.
Has your loved one’s facility complied with the generator requirements of the Florida rules for nursing homes and assisted living facilities? Have you checked on their emergency preparedness? If the facility has met the rule requirements, what happens on the 97th fuel hour? Between wind and water, recent hurricanes have crippled cities for periods of time far longer than 96 hours.
How does your loved one’s nursing home or assisted living facility measure up in areas other than hurricane preparedness? Have you visited in off-hours, when you aren’t expected? Electronic surveillance cameras capture only a part of your loved one’s day in a Miami Dade, Broward or Palm Beach County nursing home or assisted living facility. Your observations are critical in ensuring their care, as some elder adults are no longer able to accurately verbalize.
