College Football, Beer, and Car Accidents

South Florida has a number of colleges in the tri-county area, ranging from Florida Atlantic University in eastern Palm Beach and Broward counties, to Nova Southeastern University in southwest Broward county,  and down to the University of Miami and Florida International University in the Miami area.  Our area is also home to numerous other colleges, including Palm Beach Atlantic UniversityPalm Beach State CollegeLynn UniversityBroward State College and Barry University.

They are only three football teams, thoughthe Miami Hurricanesthe FAU Owls and the FIU Panthers.  All three universities are starting their football season in late August, and all those first games are against formidable teams.  The Hurricanes play the University of Florida Gators on August 24,  the Owls play the Ohio State Buckeyes on August 31 and FIU plays Tulane on August 29.  None of these are home games – reflecting the rankings of the South Florida home teams – but the games officially kick off the Fall 2019 football season.

Just this year the conservative Southeastern Conference lifted its ban on beer and wine general stadium sales, and more teams are beginning to sell alcohol at games. Alcohol generates easy-to-earn revenue and is proven to staunch falling game attendance. The Owls offer $4 dollar beers throughout the stadium, while for now, the Hurricanes and Panthers limit beer and wine sales to premier, suite or club areas.

Having a few drinks and watching a home team game, either at your favorite team bar or at the team’s stadium on a beautiful South Florida afternoon makes for a memorable day.  New to the area, and not sure where your team’s bar is?  Check alumni sites, such at the University of Florida’s Alumni Beat, for a listing of local team bars.

Enjoying game day beer, brats and ball?  Make sure that you use a ride sharing service or have your designated driver.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced that over 30,000 police officers throughout the country will be cracking down on impaired driving through Labor Day weekend since these last few weeks of summer, and the Labor Day weekend itself, are historically a dangerous times to drive.

The message is clear:  don’t drink and drive, no matter how much you’re enjoying the first college football game of the year. Alcohol-fueled drivers are far more likely to cause an accident. Every day, 29 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver and cause one death every 50 minutes.1 The annual cost of alcohol-related crashes totals more than $44 billion.

And what should you do if you’re in an accident?  If you’re hurt, call emergency medical services. But don’t assume that you’re not hurt just because you don’t need an ambulance.  Many injuries don’t manifest until well after the accident.
